This is partly because nearly two-thirds of the adults in America currently have some form of periodontal disease, which is a gum infection that is brought on by the accumulation of plaque beneath the gum line. Because this condition can lead to a host of other problems like tooth loss, several forms of cancer and hypertension, practicing excellent dental hygiene is far more significant than most may know. How Your Dental Hygiene Habits Protect Your Teeth

When it comes to fortifying your dental health through proper dental hygiene, here are the three main habits you should participate in:

Toothbrushing

The act of brushing your teeth uses the gentle abrasives in toothpaste in conjunction with the soft bristles of a toothbrush to agitate any leftover food or beverage particles.

Flossing

While toothbrushing must be a staple of any dental hygiene routine, it has its limitations. To get into the tight crevices between your teeth, it’s a must to use dental floss. Therefore, any bacteria or plaque resting at the gum line can be removed before a dental issue ensues.

Tongue Scraping

It’s almost pointless to brush and floss your teeth without thoroughly cleaning your tongue. That’s because it can touch any part of your mouth. Thus, if it’s not clean, it can carry debris and bacteria to other areas.

By gently gliding a tongue scraper over your tongue, you can lift stubborn particles that have become lodged between the papillae (the tiny bumps along the tongue).

It Matters What You Eat and Drink

In addition to practicing excellent dental hygiene, it’s important to monitor your food and beverage intake. Items that are loaded with sugar are the leading attractions for bacteria, as the latter feed on them and release acids as they digest the leftovers.

Here are some of the items you should limit your consumption of:

  • Juices
  • Sodas
  • Candy
  • Alcohol
  • Desserts
  • Energy Drinks

If you choose to indulge in any of these items, it’s even more imperative that you practice excellent dental hygiene to protect your teeth and gums.
